Trump slashes U.S. presence in Germany by 5,000 amid Iran war friction By Investing.com

Investing.com — U.S. military presence in Europe faced a sharp reduction on Friday after President Trump ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany, citing a widening rift with Berlin over the ongoing war in Iran.

The directive specifically removes an army combat brigade and scraps a previous Biden administration initiative to station a long-range conventional missile battalion in the country.

Geopolitical deadlock over Operation Epic Fury

The decision follows a period of heightened diplomatic friction after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly questioned the U.S. exit strategy in Iran.

Merz’s comments, which characterized the current leadership’s handling of the conflict as “humiliating,” appear to have triggered the White House’s pivot toward force reduction.

German officials, previously praised for meeting military spending targets, attempted to de-escalate the rhetoric, but the Pentagon confirmed that the withdrawal will likely be completed within the next six to twelve months.

The country currently serves as the primary U.S. military hub in Europe, housing more than 36,000 troops and critical infrastructure for “Operation Epic Fury”.

U.S. officials signaled that the withdrawn forces are not being moved elsewhere in Europe but are instead being reallocated to the Western Hemisphere and the Indo-Pacific.

The reduction brings American troop levels on the continent back to 2022 benchmarks, effectively reversing the buildup seen during the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Broadening pressure on NATO allies

The drawdown in Germany highlights a broader administrative trend of penalizing allies that resist direct involvement in the Iranian campaign.

Recent threats to withdraw personnel from Spain and Italy underscore this sentiment, as Madrid continues to deny the U.S. permission to use local bases for strikes against Tehran.

In contrast, Britain remains a key operational partner, continuing to allow bomber missions against Iranian targets to launch from its territory.

Installations such as Ramstein Air Base and the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center remain vital for treating casualties from the Iran conflict, though German officials do not yet expect these specific sites to be closed.

The current move mirrors a 2020 plan to remove 12,000 troops, an effort that was briefly halted by the Biden administration in 2021 before the current escalation.

Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell described the action as the result of a “thorough review” of the Department’s posture, signaling a long-term goal for Europe to lead its own conventional defense.
